Christine Perry
Percussion
At this moment …
We would find Chris practicing pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine) or reco-reco (percussion instrument used in Samba bands) before meeting friends to play Brazilian music—or studying for her weekly Brazilian Portuguese lesson.
On the CD player …
You would hear some of her favorite Brazilian singers—Beth Carvalho, Jorge Aragao and Zeca Pagodinho. “I also like Seu Jorge’s new album, “Cru,” or Jimmy Smith’s “Dot Com Blues.” “Tangle Eye”—remixes of Alan Lomax’s Southern Journey—is quite good also.” Chris also listens to jazz vibes player Bobby Hutcherson.
In the kitchen …
“I like to make soups and pastas this time of year. My partner, Charlotte, brought home a great book—Cook’s Illustrated The Best 30-Minute Recipe. I love that the authors have researched how to get the best outcome on each recipe.”
On the music stand …
“‘Stone’s Stick Control,’ a snare drum technique classic. Also, some jazz scale studies for mallets. And, of course, music for upcoming Oregon Symphony concerts.”
On the night stand …
“Flotsam by David Wiesner—a beautiful new children’s picture book I saw while volunteering at the Lewis School SMART program. Also on the night stand is Charlotte’s Web, which I’ve never read before, and my book group book The Known World by Edward P. Jones.”
Before you left …
Chris would play you some CDs of Brazilian music or take you for a walk in the nearby Rhododendron Garden across from Reed College.
