In June of 1957, Mathis appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show where he was introduced to the record buying public and became a national celebrity and household name. Columbia Records continued to release albums of Mathis singing beautiful and romantic ballads, classic standards and the best songs from Broadway musicals. These albums, like the singles, became immediate successes with sales in the millions. It was not uncommon for Mathis to have as many as four albums on the Billboard Top Albums chart at the same time.

A non-profit organization, the Oregon Symphony has grown to be one of the largest arts organizations in the Pacific Northwest and among the finest major orchestras in the nation. Under the baton of Music Director Carlos Kalmar, the Symphony performs more than 100 concerts at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and presents more than 300 educational events throughout the state each season.
